Moles mols mol?
I've seen different forms of the word moles used in the text, homework, and lecture slides and confused as to which term to use when, if it matters. Does it matter which spelling of the word I use (other than adding the "s" for plural).

Re: Moles mols mol?
I typically see the textbook use "mols" but I'm sure either way works. As long as you don't leave it as "M" which is molarity, you're fine.

Re: Moles mols mol?
I think mol is an abbreviation of mole and mols is an abbreviation of moles. I don't think it matters that much though.

Re: Moles mols mol?
Mole is the noun, referring to the concept, and mol is the unit for moles, as far as I remember.

Mol/mols is an abbreviation for moles, i don't think it matters. The previous replies are correct, just make sure to not confuse moles with "M" (molarity)!

Re: Moles mols mol?
Hello! I had a quick question for L1 in the fundamentals section outline.
Without using a calculator, estimate what amount of Br2
(in moles) can be obtained from 0.30 mol ClO2 in the reaction
6 ClO21g2 2 BrF31l2 S 6 ClO2F1s2 Br21l2.

Re: Moles mols mol?
I think that it doesn't matter too much which one you use. I think I typically see mol.

for this they simply want you to see that Br2 is in a 1:6 ratio to ClO2, so if there is 0.30 moles of ClO2, then there will be 1/6 of that of Br2, so 0.05 moles Br2.

Re: Moles mols mol?
Mole/s is the spelled out version of the abbreviations "mols" and "mol".
For example, Millimeter would be abbreviated as "mm"
In problems, usually abbreviations are used, so the "mol"

Yes, that is correct!

Yep! And the hint for when to use that is it often asks for what the "concentration" of the solution is.

Re: Moles mols mol?
Yeah I agree, I don't think it matters. I usually use "mol" just cause it's the shortest but I've seen all being used.

Re: Moles mols mol? [ENDORSED]
I agree you can use moles, mols, mol they all carry the same meaning when defining moles. However, do not get confused with M= molarity.

Re: Moles mols mol?
As many have noted above moles mols and mol can all be used when referring to moles, but it is important to not that M (capital) is not just for molar mass, but is also for molarity.

Re: Moles mols mol?
I think moles, mols, mol are all used interchangeably. In the textbook I have seen them use n, but I don't think we have to know that. However, you should use M or mol.L-1 when using molarity.

Re: Moles mols mol?
The concept of moles can be used to measure molecules. Thus, the terms are used interchangeably.
