Re: SI Units
There is a section (F6) in the book that goes over SI units and I found that helpful. Not sure exactly what we need to know but the book was a good refresher.
Re: SI Units
Today in lecture we learned the SI units for: mass (kg), length (m), time (s), volume (m³), density (kg/m³), and the prefixes specific to those units. Since our first test is a only a review of high school chemistry, these should be all we need to know! I hope this helps :)

Re: SI Units
For the test will we be expected to know the various SI unit prefixes and their meaning?

Re: SI Units
Yes, but he said the most useful ones for the class will be:
k kilo 10^3
c centi 10^-2
m milli 10^-3
and
A (Angstrom), which is 10^-10 and is used for bond lengths, but is not a SI unit.

Re: SI Units
The first test is going to take place starting Tuesday October 9 in your given discussion section. It will cover all of the review material from the lectures thus far and include homework concepts as well!

Re: SI Units
Here is some we have to know: Mass (kg) Length(m) Time(s)
Giga - 10^9
mega- 10^6
kilo - 10^3
deci- 10^-1
centi- 10^-2
milli- 10^-3
micro- 10^-6
nano- 10^-9
pico-10^-12
We went over these in lecture; hope that this list is helpful

Re: SI Units
Do all our final answers need to be converted to the base SI unit (ex:meter, kilogram, mole) or do we just use the closest prefix to it? And if we leave our answer in the base SI unit and do not use a prefix simplifying the value would our answer be wrong even if both answers would be mathematically equivalent?

usually, the problem will say what units the answer should be in; if not then I assume you use the base SI unit.

I believe that Lavelle said that as long as the answer is equivalent then he will accept the answer (if the problem does not ask for a specific unit)
