Formula units refers to the number of atoms present. In this case, there are 1.26 * 10^22 formula units present in 5.15g of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate.
((5.15 g MgSO4 * 7H2O) / 246.5 g mol^-1) *(6.022*10^23 atoms mol^-1) = 1.26 *10^22 atoms.
