In multiple questions of part E, it asked us to find the formula units, along with the moles/molecules/molecular formula of a given mass of substance (e.g. E9, E21, E25). Are formula units something we need to be familiar with? And if so, what are they and how do we calculate them?
E21. Calculate the amount (in moles) and the number of molecules and formula units (or atoms, if indicated) in 10.0 g of alumina, Al2O3

Re: Formula Units
I believe formula units is just another word for atoms or molecules, depending on the context of the problem (like if the formula given depicts a molecule or an atom). I was confused on this question too about the formula units but when I checked the solutions manual, there wasn't anything in the given solution that said anything about formula units.

Re: Formula Units
Essentially, formula units unnamed variables. There are always 6.022 * 1023 units in one mole of something. This could be atoms or molecules. I would say that you should just know that one mole converts to a quantity of Avogadro's number units.

Re: Formula Units
According to the book (See Fundamentals C3 on page F26), a formula unit is any combination of ions that have the same number of atoms as given in a specific formula. Essentially, we can think of it as an empirical formula for an ionic compound.
