Si Units

Postby Abigail Carter 4G » Sun Oct 06, 2019 11:25 pm

When do some of the less common SI units (ex. giga, mega, mili, nano, pico) come in handy/are more used?

Giga and mega are often used when describing digital information, for example, gigabytes and megabytes. Pico- is often used to describe the radius of atoms (typically 25 picometers to 260 picometers).

When we start learning the Quantum unit, we will be using more of pico- and nano- units. Also, in biology, micro- units are very commonly used.

In lecture, Prof. Lavelle also mentioned that nano units are used for experiments conducted in nanoscience and as mentioned, micro units are used more commonly in biology.
