Converting Electron Volts per Atom to Kilojoules Per Mole

Postby Amanda Bueno-Kling » Sun Nov 01, 2020 10:30 pm

I am trying to convert 1.029 Electron Volts per Atom to Kilojoules per Mole. I am having a hard time with this and wondered how I should be setting up the conversion?
The problem says: "Calculate electron affinity in kilojoules per mole from the electron affinity in electron volts per atom by using the conversion factor 1 eV=1.602×10−22 kJ and Avogadro's number."
However, when I try to convert, I can't seem to get the right answer using those numbers, so I must be setting up the conversion wrong. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Use the equation listed on your equation sheet to do this.

1 eV = 1.602x10^-19J.

1.029 eV x (1.602x10^-19 J / 1 eV) x (1 kJ / 10^3 J) x (6.02214x10^23 / 1 mol) = kJ per mol

Use this calculation to convert.

Hope this helps! :)

Just remember for all of unit analysis you want to multiply by some ratio that equals one with the unit you want to cancel out at the bottom
