Quiz 3 preparation: practice quiz 1.2--possible error?

Postby Ilana Golub 1A » Sun Feb 28, 2016 10:47 am

This question asks you to name the following compound: ch3ch(ch3)ch(ch2ch3)c(ch3)3.
The answer key names it 2,2,4-trimethyl-3-ethylpentane.

Shouldn't it be named 3-ethyl-2,2,4-trimethylpentane instead? Shouldn't ethyl come before methyl in terms of alphabetical order?

Hey,
Really lackluster response, but simply, yes, I agree with you! The ethyl should come before the (tri)methyl. Or in any case, the ethyl should always come before the methyl in terms of the naming.
