Quiz 3 Prep # 7

Postby TeaK1C » Mon Feb 29, 2016 8:33 pm

For number 7 on the last quiz prep, it asks for the product of the reaction of 2-butene with Cl2 and the answer that i got was CH3CH(Cl)CH(Cl)CH3.

Im not sure if my answer is correct, however my reasoning is that the pi bond of the double bond between the second and third carbon went and broke up the bond between the two Cl's. And so one of the Cl's attached to the second carbon and the other Cl was left with a negative bond. Now the third carbon now has a positive charge because the double bond was broken so the Cl- acted as a nucleophile and attached itself to that carbon.

Is anybody able to correct my thinking if that is wrong? Thank you!

That's the approach I took to it too and I got the same answer!
