prioritizing naming

If there are 2 substituents that are the same length apart, which would get prioritized for the lower number in naming: chloro or ethyl? or chloro or methyl?

All alkyl and halogen groups have the same rank. Try to get the lowest possible number first, and ONLY if there is a tie, give the lower number to the alphabetically-first group (bromo < butyl < chloro < ethyl etc)

Return to “*Alkanes”
