Condensed Structural formula vs substituents

Postby 204635822 » Thu Mar 03, 2016 1:53 pm

How can I tell whether the compound in the parentheses is a substituent, or if it is just the condensed structural formula?

The best way is to draw out the structure based on the given condensed formula. Then you will be able to easily identify the longest carbon chain and identify the substituents based off what is not on the main chain.
