Naming: methyl vs methly propyl

Postby 204635822 » Thu Mar 03, 2016 6:20 pm

If we have 2 substituents, methyl and methlypropyl, shouldnt methyl come first. In the textbook (page )they put methylpropyl before methyl, but in OH, the UAs have been saying otherwise.

Having the lowest numbering for substituents takes the most priority in naming organic compounds; however, if you are talking about what order methyl and methylpropyl would go in a written name of a compound, methyl should come first because it technically comes before methylpropyl alphabetically.
