Primary Carbon Atom

Postby Dianna Grigorian 1C » Thu Mar 02, 2017 9:04 pm

When would we refer to a molecule by identifying the number of carbons atoms to which each carbon is attached to i.e. when do we characterize it as a primary carbon atom, secondary, etc.?

A primary carbon is bonded to one other C, a secondary carbon is bonded to 2 other C, a tertiary carbon is bonded to 3 other C, and a quarternary carbon is bonded to 4 other C. An example is shown in your coursereader as well.
