quiz 3 naming organic molecules

Postby hannah_flagg_3F » Sun Mar 05, 2017 3:41 pm

For the quiz, do we have to use common or systematic naming? Or will we have to know both and the question will tell us which one to write?

We only have to know IUPEC naming; however, some molecules are easier to name using common names and since both are acceptable it is better to learn both as it will help you to perform better on the quiz.

When asked to name a compound, both the common name and IUPEC name will be accepted. Quite often though, the IUPEC name will be asked so make sure you know that. The common name will not be explicitly asked, so in that case you can use either naming methods. Additionally, many compounds don't have a common name, so that is why the IUPEC name may be specifically asked.
