Tert- Naming

Postby Dianna Grigorian 1C » Mon Mar 06, 2017 8:45 pm

When naming an organic structure and we find it to be a tertbutyl, how do we place this alphabetically? Do we look at "tert" as we did with iso and neo and include it in the alphabetical arrangement, or should we treat it like the Greek prefixes and ignore it?

The only prefixes you ever consider when alphabetizing is "iso", "neo", and "cyclo". Otherwise you do not consider these prefixes in nomenclature. So, text would not count.

Tert- would not be considered for alphabetical order, just like sec- too. Iso-, neo- and cyclo- you do consider for alphabetical order.
