Common name & IUPAC naming

Postby Jamie Huang 1L » Wed Mar 08, 2017 12:53 am

I know that we won't be ask for the common names on tests, but I noticed that some (i think IUPAC) names have/utilizes common naming rules, so how do I know if it's IUPAC names or just common names. Also, when do I apply the common naming rules to IUPAC names or how do I know when to ONLY use IUPAC naming?

I think usually you might see a common name prefix like "iso" when you are using IUPAC naming for a group that is on a substituent. An example would be like on page 96 on the course reader "isopropyl-cyclohexane" which utilizes the "iso" common name as a prefix to the propy, which is a substituent to the cyclohexane.

So we will not be asked to name compounds with the common names on quiz 3? Only IUPAC names?

We will only have to know IUPAC names I think!
