1.16 Ch.1 Organic Textbook Question

Postby Joseph Park 2M » Sat Mar 11, 2017 6:52 pm

Hello, I was wondering for 1.16 in the textbook solutions the answer is written as
2-Isopropyl-1,1-dimethylcyclopentane

I got 1,1-dimethyl-2-Isopropylcyclopentane

I thought that we ignore prefixes when it comes to naming things in order, is there an exception for iso-/neo-?

Thanks

The prefixes you ignore when alphabetizing are di-, tri-, tetra-...
Iso and neo are part of the group name so they are alphabetized.

The trick is if the prefix is number based you ignore it. Otherwise, it counts for alphabetical.
