Numbering

When it comes to numbering alkanes, does it matter where you start? Like in question 5C on quiz 3, where it was a cyclobutane with ethyl and methyl substituents, what would be the 1 and what would be the 3?

Hello,

It does matter where you start numbering the carbons. In this case, you would want to assign lower numbers alphabetically. Since E comes before M, you would assign the lower number to ethyl and the higher number to methyl. Therefore, the name of the hydrocarbon would be 1-ethyl-3-methyl cyclobutane.

Return to “*Alkanes”
