Does R just represent any molecule except for a hydrogen?

R represents a carbon chain of any length

Sometimes it can also include halogen, nitrogen or oxygen.

When writing more than one R, do we have to denote them differently? For example, would we use R, R', R''...

R, R', and R'' denotes different attached hydrogens or hydrocarbons on the same molecule.
