Tips and Tricks for remembering Functional Groups?

Postby GabrielGarciaDiscussion1i » Sat Mar 17, 2018 12:12 pm

Hello friends, does anybody have any tips and tricks they would like to share with group on how we can remember functional groups. Any unique thought processes or cool mnemonics that helped them? I struggle with functional groups and so anything will be helpful, thanks.

I remember them by where they can occur in a molecule. ketones and ethers can go anywhere, aldehydes alcohols and carboxyl's must be at the end, and amines (if CNH2) must be at the end, otherwise can go anywhere.

In addition to what was said above, I remember based off each functional group. Here is a list of the ones we learned in class.

When there is an OH (hydroxyl group):
-Alcohol (there is an OH group at the end of a carbon chain), ex. C-OH

For an O single bonded to 2 carbons:
-Ether (O is in the middle of two carbons), ex. C-O-C

For any C double bonded to an O (carbonyl), there are 3 options:
-Aldehyde (when bonded to 1 or 2 H), ex. CH2O
-Ketone (when bonded to 2 C), ex. CH3COCH3; easy to remember that it is attached to a carbon chain, not just H

And in between, with both a hydroxyl group and a carbonyl :
-Carboxylic acid (ex. COOH)

When there is a carbon bonded to a N:
-Amine, ex. CH3NH2
