How to find the parent chain

Postby Chem_Mod » Thu Aug 25, 2011 2:23 pm

In IUPAC, are prefixes such as iso- taken into account when alphabetizing the substituents? Also, if a compound has two or more chains of the same length, which is the parent chain?

Yes. We follow the text and iso- is not ignored. The name is easier if one uses the parent hydrocarbon as the chain with the greatest number of substituents.
