Do dashes in naming matter

Postby Mara Lockhart 3J » Mon Mar 09, 2015 8:04 pm

If you are naming a structure that is 2-methylbutane, but wrote it as 2-methyl-butane, would you still get full credit? Does having the dash in-between methyl and butane matter? If so, how?

I would play it safe and remove the dash.

Justin is correct, there is no dash between the root name (prop, but, hex, etc) and the prefix directly before it.

2-methylbutane is correct but I give credit for 2-methyl-butane as it does make it easier to read.
