Homework problem 1.21

Postby Frances Relampagos 1J » Wed Mar 02, 2016 12:09 am

I don't understand why the answer is 5-methyl-cyclopenta-1,3-diene. Should it be 3-methyl-cyclopenta-1,4-diene since it has the smallest configuration?

When considering alkenes, the double bonds have priority for the lowest numbers. Therefore, we assign the lowest numbers to both the double bonds before assigning a number to the substituent.
