Problem 1.16

Postby Alexander_Chang_1I » Sun Mar 12, 2017 12:20 am

Why is the name 2-isopropyl-1, 1-dimethylcyclopentane? Is there some sort of rule for cycloalkanes that states propyl should come before methyl in the name?

Prefixes such as 'iso' and 'neo' are included as part of a substituent name, so they are subject to being placed in alphabetical order. As a result, isopropyl would be considered with the 'i', so it would come before dimethyl, which is considered with the 'm'.
