Benzene
Would we have to memorize molecules such as benzene? In the organic course reader i noticed how significant and commonplace benzene pops up. Or do we only need to know the common ten prefixes in order to name a molecule (including the others mentioned in lecture?)

Re: Benzene
Dr. Lavelle hasn't covered benzene as a substituent in class.
So, the questions assigned for homework also neglect the larger benzene problems.
When benzene is the main ring, then you just write benzene
For example - Chloro Benzene
1,2 Dichloro Benzene (orthodichlorobenzene)
etc..
It is written as a phenyl when used as a substituent.
But as far as I know,
you just need to remember the naming of the 1st ten hydrocarbon chains,
and the functional groups covered in class.
(Alcohol, ether, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid,)
the alkanes, alkenes and alkynes.
Also - naming the substituents. (Chloro, Bromo etc.)
