2-Methyl-2,3-butadiene

What's th best way to figure out this molecular formula? Do we have to draw out the lewis structure first and count how many carbon and hydrogen atoms there are? Or is there a faster and simpler way to figure it out?

i think its fastest to draw up quick line structure and simply count up the number of C atoms and the number of H atoms. Your resulting formula should end up in the form CyHx where y=#of Catoms and x=#of H atoms

Another way to do this may be to quickly write the formulas of the parts of the name, like methyl- CH3
And then for the base chain, take 2 hydrogen atoms off per double bond and 1 hydrogen atom off per attached group from the base alkane, like: butane C4H10 so total hydrogen atoms taken off would be [2(double bond) + 2(double bond) + 1 (for methyl group)] making it C4H5
Now add the two together making it C5H8

It should probably also be 3-methyl-1,2-butadiene
