Naming Alkenes

Postby 704578485 » Sun Feb 28, 2016 1:05 pm

On several practice exercises at the end of Chapter 1 of the organic textbook(particularly 21-29), when it asks you to name cycloalkenes I will generally get the naming correct but then when looking at the answers in the back, many of them will have (Z) or (cis) at the beginning of the names. Will we be marked down if we don't include these and if so what is the rule(s) to follow when including them in the name?

You will need to include them if it is possible. If there are possible geometric isomers, and the name without the prefix gives you more than one possible answer than it is required.

Is this only an issue for alkenes?
