Homework 1.12C naming

Postby AvaM1c » Sun Feb 28, 2016 6:43 pm

Hi, for naming CH3CHC(CH3)C(CH3)3 I named it 2-2-3-trimethyl-3-pentene but the book answer has it as 3-4-4-trimethyl-2-pentene. Can someone please explain why my answer is wrong?

I got the same answer that you did, perhaps it's because you want to get the lowest number possible for the pentene? (2 instead of 3)

Yup, you want to give the double bond priority in numbering. So give it the lowest number first.

In numbering, the priority goes as follows:
1. functional groups like --OH or carboxylic acid
2. double or triple bonds
3. other substituent groups

Try to give #1 and #2 the lowest numbers first before proceeding with other substituent groups.
