Cis and Trans

Since "trans" and "E" both refer to the highest priority groups being on opposite side of a double bond, does that mean they can be used interchangeably to name the molecule?

Although the IUPAC standard for naming uses Z & E instead of cis and trans, Dr. Lavelle said he will accept either naming convention in 14B. So yes, they can be used interchangeably.

As you move on in organic chemistry, you will learn that there is a subtle difference between the E/Z and cis/trans systems. For this class, we will use them interchangeably.
