Alkenes as functional groups

Postby emilie liu 3G » Tue Mar 14, 2017 1:20 pm

When identifying functional groups in a molecule, why would we consider a double bonded group an "alkene functional group"? I thought that the double bond must be included in the parent chain as opposed to a functional group or substituent.

If the alkene is part of the longest parent chain, it is thought of as a functional group part of that chain, meaning that it must be prioritized in naming. This is is different from a substituent which is attached separately somewhere along the parent chain.
