Alkenes and Functional Groups

Hello mates!
I had a question regarding if functional groups can affect whether the mom carbon chain will be alkane or alkene. Lets say we have a aldehyde connected to a pentane, will the double bond within the aldehyde change the pentane to pentene or would it still be pentane?

It would still be a pentane, any double bonds that are part of a functional group are only considered as part of that functional group. If you had a double bond elsewhere, that is when you change the name of the alkane to an alkene.

To add on, the double bond from the aldehyde does not need to be explicitly written because it is implied that it is there (since it corresponds to the functional group) when you add the suffix -al to the end of pentane (after dropping the e of course).

On the winter 2015 final, question 10A, do the phenols count as alcohols? Because I only count 3 alcohols and the solution says there's 5 :/

I had the same question. In the answer key or point distribution is says 4pt for identifying 4 correct functional groups, so I assumed it would be.
