1.31 Drawing a structure

1.31 Drawing a structure

In 1.31 it asks us to draw (E)-3,7-Diethylocta-1,3,7-triene. Can someone walk me through how to draw this structure. I drew something, but it does not match the answer in the back of the book. One main thing I am confused about is why there seems to be a 9 C-C chain as the the backbone of the structure instead of an 8 C-C chain as stated by the prefix -octa. Any clarification is appreciated!

Hi Martha, the parent carbon chain is required to have the maximum number of multiple bonds. If we picked the 9-carbon chain we'd only get 2 out of the 3 double bonds onto it.

Hint: try starting with a straight-chain octane and make modifications from there.

The numbering starts at the top of the double bond on the left size. Since this is an E molecule, the substituents have to be on opposite sides, which is why the chain looks like it is continuing to nine, but there are actually 8. Let me know if you are still confused.
