pg 29 numbering of cycloalkene

Postby kshalbi » Sun Feb 28, 2016 6:08 pm

Instead of numbering this molecule 1,4 wouldn't it be better to number it as 1,3 by replacing the 5 with 1, 6 with 2, and 1 with 3? Why is this not correct?

The first double bond always has to be between carbons 1 and 2. Therefore if you keep numbering after carbon 2, the next double bond occurs between carbons 4 and 5.
