Postby Dianna Grigorian 1C » Thu Mar 02, 2017 8:41 pm

What are geometric isomers and how do they differ from constitutional isomers?

Geometric isomers have the same molecular formula but differ in the arrangement of groups with respect to double bonds or rings (eg. trans and cis isomers). Constitutional isomers have the same molecular formula but differ in structure.

"Constitutional isomers are isomers where the connectivity of atoms differs in molecules. Geometric isomers are a type of stereoisomers. This type of isomers results, when molecules have a restricted rotation, basically, due to a double bond. When there is a single carbon – carbon bond, the rotation is possible. Therefore, however we draw the atoms, their arrangement will be the same. But when there is a carbon – carbon double bond, we can draw two arrangements of atoms in a molecule."
