Are we supposed to know how to do these problems? If so, what does diene mean?

You're not supposed to know how to do Q 1.21 for quiz 3 since Prof. Lavelle said we will not be quizzed on alkenes (carbon chains with a double bond). A diene is a hydrocarbon with two carbon double bonds.

For part C, is it acceptable to start numbering at the top left before the double bond? It gives nearly the same answer, and since the priority for lower numbers is for the double bonds I would think that the locations of the methyl groups would not matter. The name I got was 3-isopropyl-4,5 dimethylcyclohexa-1,4 diene. The answer from the book is 3-isopropyl-1,2-dimethylcyclohexa-1,4-diene.

You would still want lower numbers, therefore you should start counting from the right and get "1,2-dimethyl" rather than "4,5-dimethyl".
