Naming cyclopentdiene

Postby Noor_Burney_1L » Thu Mar 16, 2017 6:55 pm

On page 29 of the Introduction to Organic Chemistry textbook it says that for Cyclopentdiene, because there is only one possible structure, numbering is not required.
How is there only one possible structure? The two possible names I had gotten were 1,3-cyclopentdiene and 1,4-cyclopentdiene. So, how is the name just cyclopentdiene rather than naming it as 1,3-cyclopentdiene?

The name you provided, 1,4-cyclopentdiene, is the same structure as 1,3-cyclopentdiene. Therefore we can simply say cyclopentdiene. 1,3-cyclopentdiene is more correct, though, as it uses lower numbers than 1,4. Again though, they are the same structure and so the numbers can be ignored.

Okay thank you! Would it still be considered correct if I included the numbering and named it as 1,3-cyclopentdiene instead of cyclopentdiene, even though there is only one structure?
