Naming 4-methyl-1-pentyne in common name?

Postby Jeremy Jong 3H » Sun Feb 28, 2016 10:52 pm

What would the common name of 4-methyl-1-pentyne be? I got isohexane.. but do we have to specify the location of the iso part?

Since it is an alkyne the name must end in -yne. You do not specify the location of an iso but you specify the location of the triple bond, which in this case would be 1. So the name is 1-isohexyne or isohex-1-yne.

The IUPAC name would be preferable in this case. It gets confusing to combine common prefixes like iso and neo with multiple bonds.
