Priority of Double Bonds, Triple Bonds, and other F. Groups

Postby Albert Chong_1L » Mon Mar 07, 2016 10:16 pm

Hi,

I was wondering the priority for double bonds, triple bonds, and other functional groups.

I believe double and triple bonds take priority over all other functional groups.
I also think that double bonds take priority over triple bonds.

These conclusions are derived from various examples.

Can someone confirm this and also shed light on the priority of other functional groups to each other?
For example the priority of keytones to amines? Or Amides to amines?

Thanks.

if you're referring to priority as far a numbering the parent chain goes, then yes, functional groups receive highest priority and then double/triple bonds, and then other substituents (i.e. alkyls, halogens, nitro, or alkoxy groups).
as far as priority of functional groups to each other goes, the order from highest to lowest priority is: carboxylic acid, nitrile, aldehyde, ketone, alcohol, amines. so, in a molecule that includes more than one of these types of functional groups use the suffix coinciding with the functional group coming first on that list of priority.

Return to “*Alkynes”
