Structures

Postby Yasmine Choroomi 2C » Fri Mar 03, 2017 12:38 pm

Hi! For triple bonds, are you allowed to draw the structure like /\/\/\/\ and then put the triple bond on one of the diagonals? because in the book for number 1.11c which is (CH3)2CHCCCH2CH3 the drawing shows one straight long segment with the triple bond parallel to it. How do you know which to do?

Also, If you have a double bond on the 1 carbon, do you need to write it in the name? like would you write 1-propene? or just propene?

Thanks!

Carbons bonding via triple bonds are sp-hybridized, so they have linear geometries. To represent this, we draw the two single bonds and one triple bond in R-CC-R all parallel or along the same line.

For propene, we do not need to specify the number, since there is only one possible structure. However, for butene and longer chains, we must specify the location of the double bond even if it is the first bond, e.g. 1-butene or 2-butene.
