I dont understand why a) is a trans isomer if the CH3 groups are on the same side of the double bond. Shouldn't it be a cis isomer?

On a more complicated set of groups around a double bond, the (E) (Z) nomenclature should be used rather than cis-trans. Unfortunately sometimes (Z) is equated to cis and (E) is equated to trans, which is not correct.
