Determine Z or E from a line structure

Postby Kevin Le 1L » Tue Mar 14, 2017 8:44 pm

Generally, how does someone know whether a molecule is Z or E just from the line structure?

If the 2 constituents with the highest molar mass on each side are on the same side of the line structure, thenn the molecule is a cis molecule and a Z is used to name it. If the 2 constituents with the highest molar mass on each side are on different sides, then it is trans and a E is used to name the molecule.
