Double Bonds

When referring to a end to end overlap is that the sigma bond or the pi?

Sigma bonds are end-to-end overlap. Pi bonds are side-by-side overlap. If you had Dr. Lavelle for Chem 14A, remember he shows pi bonds overlap side by side by placing the two pieces of chalk between his fingers. They cannot rotate when they are side by side. The only way to do so is if the pi bond breaks and becomes just a sigma bond.
