The priorities of the various functional groups help you determine the final part of a molecule name. For example, if carboxylic acid is the highest priority group in a molecule, then the name must end with -oic acid. If a different functional group has the highest priority in another molecule, then its suffix must be used at the end of the name. Hope this helps!
