Practice Problem Sets

Postby Alexis Elliott 1J » Tue Mar 14, 2017 12:05 am

I am a bit confused as if we have to know how to name molecules with more than one double bond (or more than one triple bond). Dr. Lavelle did not go over this in class but on many of the practice work sheets that have been posted, there have been a decent amount of problems that require use to know how to name these types of molecules.

If we do need to know this, is the sufficient information in the textbook?

Naming structures with multiple double bonds follows the same principle as all other compounds.
There is however, one small difference --
You retain the 'a' after the prefix (indicating the number of carbons)
and put di, tri .... to indicate how many double bonds there are.

For Example -

CH2=CH-CH=CH2

Would be 1,3 But a di ene

PS - Bold and italics just to indicate the difference. You dont need to make anything bold or italic while naming these compounds. (No spaces between the segments of the name)
