General Rules of Thumb for Sig Figs

Postby George Kefalas 1D » Sun Oct 08, 2023 8:47 pm

I understand that rounding to sig figs occurs at the end of a calculation when getting your final result, but, when working through problems in this class that require several calculations, how many decimal places should I generally hold (say on an exam) throughout a problem before rounding with sig figs?

Hey,
When solving the problem, I would use three decimal places, unless the equation says otherwise, and then round the final answer by the least number of significant figures if the equations says to do that.

When doing calculations, for me I generally like to keep most of the numbers (around 6), or you can also round the sig figs to the smallest sig fig variable.
