Significant figures in final answer

Postby Sei Lam 3F » Mon Dec 04, 2023 9:46 am

When we're giving our final answer, do we report it using the largest number of sig figs or the smallest? I've been browsing Chemistry Community for a few minutes and found similar questions, but with contradicting answers, so I wanted to clarify. Thanks!

I have found the best results as using the largest amount sig figs in the problem to get the most accurate answer. It shouldn't be much of problem for the final is multiple choice.

The professor said that as long as the answers are the same when rounding off it is okay to reduce the significant figures. An example he gave was that when you know that the answer will have 2 significant figures, you don't need to keep all 8 sig figs, it is okay to reduce to 4 to avoid round-0ff errors.
