What is the difference between the amount of significant figures needed when multiplying and the amount of significant figures needed when dividing?

They have the same rule: for both cases, you would use the least number of sig figs given in any number in the problem to determine how many are needed for your answer. :)
i.e. 2.8*3.48= 9.7 (used two sig figs as the least number of sig figs is two due to 2.8)

You need the same amount of sig figs in order to be able to multiply or divide.

Hello, there is no distinct rule for counting significant figures for both multiplication, or division. they both follow the same general pattern of sig figs.
