### Sig Fig Accuracy

When performing dimensional analysis, why are sig figs applied to each 'step' and not just the final answer? Won’t this result in a less accurate final answer?

I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I've always done it is to keep track of how many sig figs I have while I'm solving equations and whatnot BUT I don't round at all in my calculator until my final answer where I can see how many sig figs it is supposed to be because I kept track of it in previous steps.

I'm pretty sure that rounding significant figures should not be applied to each step, because that will decrease the accuracy of your final answer. In between each step, you should be sure to keep more significant figures than there are supposed to be to retain accuracy.

Today at the Step Up session i was told that sig figs will need to be accurate for test 2. With that being said i know the rules for multiplication and division, but adding and subtracting still confuses me. Does anyone have any simple easy to remember solutions while adding/subtracting with sig figs?

You just use the lowest amount of decimal places when adding and subtracting.

If you were to round the number after every step, the level of accuracy of your final answer could be completely off because all the steps add up at the end.
