Sig Figs

Postby jocelyntzeng » Fri Oct 05, 2018 12:59 am

If you have multiple numbers within an equation, and one of them is much more significant than the other (or the number with the largest sig fig is irrelevant), do you go with the most relevant one or with the data provided?

I would usually go with the data provided because it is hard to determine whether conversion factors are "perfect conversions" where you would ignore significant digits, whereas the given data is often more clear.

This is what my TA told me. You should do the calculation with all the numbers given and just determine sig figs at the end. Like for example 2.10 x 6.005 = 12.6105 -> then you can just use determine from 2.10 to use just 3 sig figs in your actual answer so it'll be 12.61. To summarize you can just use all the data when doing calculations and worry about sig fig in the end if that answers your question?

Usually deal with sig figs at the end, that way your calculations remain the same as anyone else doing the problem.

Ya just do the calculations first and determine sig figs at the end using the fewest amount of "given" sig figs.

Ya you want to wait to round until the end to get a more accurate answer
