sig figs in periodic table

Postby Lauren Solouki 4E » Tue Oct 09, 2018 7:28 pm

If the number of sig figs in the provided periodic table are less than that in the question, should our final answer have the least amount of sig figs in the periodic table or in the question?

The sig figs should be based on the given values in the question, not in the periodic table. So even though there are more sig figs in the values provided in the question, you would still use that instead.

The amount of significant figures in your final answer should be based on the significant figures given in the problem, not the periodic table. However, you would only use the least number of significant figures when using multiplication and/or division to solve the problem. For problems solved through addition and/or subtraction, use the least number of decimal places.

It is best to use the all the significant figures from the periodic table as well as solving your way through a problem with multiplication, division, addition, etc. This way the calculation will be as exact as possible for the final answer. Only by the very end do you round the answers according to the given value with the least significant figures.

I think it is best to use the number of sig figs found in the question. However, when performing the calculations, you should be as exact as possible and use however many figures given on the periodic table. Then, put your answer in sig figs that match the answer.

You always look to the least amount of sig figs in any problem. It makes practical sense because the least number of sig figs determines how precise you can be in your calculations.

It is best to follow sig fig rules based on what is given to you in the question
