Will we be docked points on homework assignments and exams if our answers do not have the correct number of significant figures?
We most likely will be marked down points since significant figures are important in chemistry. It is important to understand them in order to be a good chemist.

I assume that we will since maintaining the correct amount of significant figures was an important part of high school chemistry and is a needed skill as a chemist. As a good practice, the correct amount of significant figures should be reported in the final answer of problems.
I would assume that he'll grade us based on our significant figures because it determines the accuracy of measurements. The accuracy is really important for determining error because no scientific tool can ever determine a measurement perfectly; there's always some discrepancy.
